Most garage cabinets look similar in a brochure. The differences that actually matter — the ones that determine whether your cabinets last five years or twenty — aren’t visible in a photo. They’re in the board density, the certification standards the system was built to meet, the hardware rating, and the warranty that backs it all up.
If you’re comparing cabinet options for your Colorado Springs garage, this article walks you through what separates a commercial-grade system from a consumer-grade one, what to look for before you spend anything, and what Colorado Springs Garage Floors offers.
Consumer-Grade vs. Commercial-Grade: Why the Distinction Matters
The garage cabinet market is crowded with consumer-grade options — flat-pack kits from big-box stores, imported boxes built to a price point, systems that look clean in a showroom photo and start showing wear within two to three years.
Commercial-grade cabinets are built to a different standard. They’re independently certified for higher compression loads, use denser substrate materials, and carry warranties that consumer-grade products typically don’t.
The Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI) sets quality standards for commercial wood products. AWI-certified cabinets meet compression strength requirements of at least 60 PSI — meaning the cabinet box itself resists deformation under sustained load. In a garage where boxes, tools, and seasonal equipment accumulate over time, that matters.
Consumer-grade cabinets are typically not AWI-certified. They may use lower-density particleboard that swells with humidity changes, hinges that fail under regular use, and drawer glides not rated for the loads garage storage actually demands.
What to Look For in a Quality Garage Cabinet
Before choosing a cabinet system, ask the following:
- Is it AWI-certified? Third-party certification verifies build quality isn’t just a marketing claim.
- What is the compression strength? Look for at least 60 PSI on the cabinet box.
- Is it Made in USA? Domestic manufacturing typically means tighter quality control and faster resolution if warranty issues arise.
- What does the warranty actually cover — and for how long? A 10-year warranty on both cabinets and hardware is the benchmark for a genuinely commercial-grade system.
- Are the drawer glides full-extension? Partial-extension glides reduce usable space. Full-extension, 100-lb rated glides are standard for garage applications.
- How are the hinges rated? Concealed, 6-way adjustable hinges keep doors aligned over time even as the cabinet or wall settles slightly.
The Cabinet System We Install
The garage cabinets we offer are AWI-certified, Made in USA, and built from commercial-quality furniture board with thermally fused laminate — a surface treatment that resists scratching, moisture, and the UV exposure that comes with Colorado’s altitude and climate.
The system carries a 10-year warranty on cabinets and hardware. That covers the components most likely to show wear over time: hinges, drawer glides, and the laminate surface itself. View the full warranty here.
Hardware details: concealed 6-way adjustable hinges on all doors. Full-extension, 100-lb rated ball bearing drawer glides. Off-floor mounting as standard, which keeps cabinets protected from floor-level moisture and makes cleaning the floor underneath straightforward.

Hardware Selection
Two pull styles are available. You select your preference at the estimate — it’s a small detail that makes a visible difference in the final look.
Hinges are concealed and 6-way adjustable, which means doors can be fine-tuned after installation without removing them from the cabinet.
Professional Installation
Cabinet installation is included with every system we sell. We don’t ship boxes and hand you instructions — we handle the layout, leveling, mounting, and finishing.
Off-floor mounting is standard on every install. That keeps cabinets protected from floor-level moisture and makes it easier to keep the garage floor itself clean.
If you’re also coating your garage floor, we typically sequence the floor coating first and cabinet installation second. That eliminates the need to work around existing cabinets and protects the coating during the install.
Caring for Your Garage Cabinets
Thermally fused laminate surfaces clean easily with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid abrasive scrubbers or solvent-based cleaners — they can dull the finish over time.
For drawer glides, a light wipe-down twice a year is enough to keep them operating smoothly. Don’t overload shelves beyond their rated weight, and store any chemical or corrosive products away from the laminate surface to protect both the cabinet and the hardware. Frequently Asked Questions
Are these cabinets available in custom sizes?
The system is available in pre-configured kits and individual cabinet units in the sizes listed above. During the estimate, we’ll work through the layout to maximize your available wall and floor space using the available configurations.
Can I coordinate my cabinet color with my garage floor coating?
Yes. Many clients coordinate their cabinet finish with their floor flake or solid color selection. We can walk through both at the same estimate. See our garage floor color options for reference.
Do you offer other storage solutions beyond cabinets?
Yes — we also offer slatwall and accessories, open wire and wood shelving, and overhead storage organizers. See all garage storage options here.
How long does cabinet installation take?
Most installations are completed in one day. Exact timing depends on the size of the system and whether floor coating work is being combined in the same visit.
What does the warranty cover?
The cabinet warranty covers the cabinet boxes and panels for 10 years. The hardware warranty covers hinges and drawer glides for 10 years. Both are backed by the manufacturer. View the full warranty document here.
