Why Our Competitors Tell You Garage Floor Epoxy Is Better, AND Why This Claim is FALSE
Our competitors are telling our potential customers that using epoxy as a base coat is better as it gives you better adhesion and moisture vapor barrier, but this just isn’t true.
We asked our supplier Slide-Lok, (they are also Chemical Engineers) to let us know why our product is better and why this claim is false, and below is the summary of what they said.
- Epoxy is also a lower-cost material, so contractors using it may simply be trying to reduce their material expenses to keep prices down—often at the cost of cure time, flexibility, or long-term durability. Epoxy is less expensive than polyaspartic.
- The use of epoxy can often be a sign of a contractor getting started, who has not yet invested in the mechanical surface prep equipment, like the diamond bit grinder that Colorado Springs Garage Floors uses. Garage floor epoxy is better is a false claim.
- So while some competitors claim “epoxy is more adhesive,” that’s simply not true when both coatings are applied over dry, properly prepped concrete. A well-installed all-polyaspartic system is extremely robust and often penetrates deeper than 100% solids epoxy. Our polyaspartic frequently exceeds the tensile strength of the concrete itself, meaning that when tested, the failure occurs within the concrete, not the coating bond line (see photo). It is a proven moisture vapor barrier.
- There may be situations where epoxy is appropriate, mostly with a wet or damp concrete, or when concrete prep was done with acid etching instead of diamond bit grinding. We have access and have completed epoxy flooring, but only in the right situations – when they are the right fit for the job. You don’t need to use an epoxy primer if the surface is dry and properly prepared. (We always properly prepare our floors with our diamond-bit grinder).
Garage Floor Epoxy is better is a false claim
When you compare estimates, ask about the prep method, the number of coats and what product is being used, whether the flake is being counted as a “coat,” and what warranty backs the work. Those answers will tell you a lot about the value you’re getting—and why Colorado Springs Garage Floors Polyaspartic Floor Coating is a better option.
Why Colorado Springs Garage Floors is the Better Choice
Colorado Springs Garage Floors is a local, family-operated company focused on doing the basics exceptionally well. That starts with listening to what you want from your space, helping you choose a finish that fits your style and budget, and then preparing the concrete the right way. Our crews use dust-controlled diamond bit grinding to create an ideal profile for adhesion, repair cracks and spalls, and clean the surface thoroughly before any coating goes down. With more than 16 years serving homeowners and businesses across the region, we’ve built our reputation on quality workmanship, clear communication, and floors that perform in Colorado’s unique climate. Garage floor epoxy is better is a false claim. Polyaspartic coatings are a smarter long-term choice for most garages and work areas. They cure quickly, resist hot-tire pickup, and stand up to oil, road salts, and common household chemicals. Because polyaspartic is UV stable, it won’t yellow or chalk in sunlight the way many epoxies can. The finish is dense and non-porous, so cleanup is simple and the floor keeps its consistent look year after year. Add in the wide range of colors and decorative flake blends, and you get a floor that’s as attractive as it is durable.
What truly sets our installations apart is the system behind the shine. We use a true three-coat approach where the decorative flake is not counted as a coat. That means you get a penetrating primer, a high-build body coat, and a protective clear topcoat designed to work together as a single, robust system. Proper prep plus a real three-coat build gives you excellent adhesion, abrasion resistance, and a finish that handles daily use without peeling or premature wear. Most projects are completed with minimal downtime, so you can get back to using your space quickly. Check out our process here.
You may hear competitors claim that epoxy “sticks better” or is “just as good for less.” Epoxy is typically cheaper up front, which is why some contractors lean on it, especially if they don’t own the grinding equipment needed for best-in-class prep. But when concrete is properly ground, clean, and dry, both epoxy and polyaspartic can bond very well. Independent pull-off tests regularly show polyaspartic bonding so strongly that the concrete itself fails before the coating does. That is the goal in any professional installation and a big reason many homeowners choose polyaspartic for longevity.
Our warranty – Slide-Lok gives you a 15 year residential warranty, but we at Colorado Springs Garage Floors extend that to a lifetime warranty – see here – Warranty-Slide-Lok-Residential-and-Colorado-Springs-Garage-Floors-Updated-2022
